Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen aims to lure in more Japanese investment for theKingdom’s food and beverage and hospitality sector. During the 25th International Conference on the Future of Asia in Tokyo, the Prime Minister announced that Cambodia will be making it easier for Japanese companies to invest. The Government will be making changes to the corporate tax system, by eliminating the minimum tax imposed to make the business sector more competitive and to promote the expansion of Cambodia’s economy.

During the gathering, the Prime Minister also praised Japanese investment for their quality and the positive impact it has on the Kingdom’s economy and society. From 1994 to the first quarter of 2019, the Council for the Development of Cambodia registered 137 projects by companies from Japan, with total investment of $2.5 billion. Most of these projects were in the food processing, hospitality, health and retail, energy, electronic components, auto spare parts, and the agro-industry.
Japanese Investment surging in Cambodia
  • Cambodia’s approved investments jumped almost 15% in 2018, sustained by record-high commitments by Japanese companies and planned capital injection in the country’s first expressway by China.
  • Japan is Cambodia’s 2nd biggest overseas investor, with commitments skyrocketing 14-fold to $889 million with eight projects.
  • According to data from the Council for the Development of Cambodia, the combined figure of planned investments from domestic and foreign companies rose 14.7% from 2017 to $6.5 billion in 2018.
Cambodia is experiencing robust tourism growth. The Kingdom’s Siem Reap province in particular received about 787, 900 foreign tourists. The country’s rising tourist inflow, growing population base and affluence are major factors fuelling an increasing demand for quality products and services within the food and beverage and hospitality industry.
